Description
This handcrafted sweat lodge drum was made by Ray Gallegos, a skilled drum maker who grew up in Cochiti Pueblo, and learned the traditional art of drum making from his father. As authentic Native American craftsmanship becomes increasingly rare, finding drums made with natural materials and time-honored techniques is more difficult than ever.
Ray carefully prepared the rawhide by hand—stretching, scraping, and cutting each drumhead and lacing with a small knife. Because rawhide is exceptionally strong, it requires an equally strong drum ring to ensure durability and tone.
These drums are commonly used in sweat lodge ceremonies and for traditional hand drumming, continuing a cultural legacy that spans generations.
Handcrafted by Ray Gallegos of Cochiti Pueblo, non enrolled, actual drum is shown.
Measures approximately 11.25" diameter, shown drum beater included.
