Tarahumara pottery is artfully made by the age-old coil method. Rolls of natural clay are painstakingly coiled to form the shape of the vessel without using a wheel. The rolls are smoothed and polished with a piece of gourd shell. Firing takes place in an open pit fire and the red design created by applying crushed iron oxide.
