Use Kiva Ladders To Enhance Southwestern Style Home Decorating

Native Kiva LaddersFlutes pad

Kiva ladders or Wooden Indian log ladders as they are sometimes called, are some of the most intriguing elements of southwest decorating and design. While traveling through the southwest you will certainly notice that pueblo style log ladders are the most recognizable symbols of American Indian design and art, used for impressive, rustic and southwest style home decorating. Kiva ladders are hand made wooden ladders usually fashioned from pine logs that have been scraped by hand. The ladder rungs are then fastened to the two long poles with rawhide string. The ladder is smaller at the top than it is at the bottom, creating a dimension of height.

One easy way to incorporate the pueblo style look and feel in your room, without actually decorating with Native designs, is to use a primitive style, pueblo ladder or kiva wooden ladder. The ladders will create a subtle but distinct village style or western look to the design. A kiva ladder also creates a wonderful way to display some of your most treasured western rugs or throw blankets. Other southwestern style accessories that look nice with wooden ladders are Mexican style throws, Indian pottery and drums, wood dough bowls and primitive style lamps with rawhide lamp shades. You can also use ladders to draw attention to unique design styles you may like, such as the tree of life pattern or other pueblo designs. Using the kiva ladder as a way to display trinkets will liven up the Native American style in your interior decorating, add bright colors, and make the ladder a functional part of your home decor.

There is something intriguing about pueblo style dwellings made of traditional style adobe bricks with their Indian ladders on the roofs. This image has become a true representation of southwest interior design and style. Many homes in New Mexico and Arizona are built to imitate the early pueblo style, and the kiva ladder is always used. We find pueblo designs on rugs, dolls, pottery, paintings, art, and rustic furniture. And, the rustic log ladders have become popular in cabins, log homes and also anywhere people like western or country style.

Use your imagination. There is no right or wrong way to how wooden ladders can be used. You can create an interesting bookshelf by combining two ladders together and connecting them with boards in the middle. You probably already own some rugs you can use, or put a small table beside it along with an American Indian style drum and you will create a beautiful design that is also useful.

A lot people use kiva ladders to hang southwestern throw blankets to bundle up in during those cool winter evenings. You can use kiva ladders for hanging decorative blankets or comforters in your bedroom when not needed. Use kiva style wooden ladders in all your rooms, in the same way or differently, without it looking overly done. So, if you want a truly beautiful Native style element to liven up your home decor, think about using rustic Indian kiva ladders.
