| Exceptional Southwest Decor for Home, Office & Unique Gifts Native American Acoma Horse Hair Pottery Bear 5x3 (119)This is an authentic southwest Native American pottery vase made by hand with natural clay and hand etched images with traditional patterns and colors of the Acoma Pueblo Indians. Acoma Pueblo is famous for creating beautiful pottery that has been highly desired by collectors. The art of Acoma pottery making is passed down from each generation. Our pueblo pottery has a rich heritage and many of our potters and painters range from Grand parents to Grand children in the same family. The Acoma people are warm and friendly, living in Pueblos of their tribal lands. They want to see their both their language and traditional skills continued. We have had to privilege of becoming friends with the Acoma potters and count it a real honor to be welcomed into their homes. It gives us a personal appreciation for the culture and a desire to share their rich heritage with others. You too can own a piece of history and help advance Pueblo pottery to help continue the ancient art. We feel a deep sense of responsibility in helping to preserve it for future generations. With your help we can raise awareness and would like to see a revival of the traditional crafts among the younger members of the tribe. One mother shared with us that the children are teased and afraid to speak their traditional dialect or practice traditional handcrafts. The historic Acoma Pueblo Indians have a rich history and they need to preserve it. For some it is also a means of financial support for their families. This piece is a traditional clay pottery horse hair design, made famous by Native American potters. Actual horse hair is applied to the pottery during firing and becomes a part of the piece. Created by hand by artist Gilbert Concho, Gilbert suffers with diabetes and recently had to have his toes amputated. Active for many years as an elder in the Pueblo, he can no longer participate the he once did. Working with his wife Becky, selling their original Indian art work is now their only source of income. Intricate patterns are etched without the use of patterns or templates. This is a perfect rustic home accent for southwest decor as well as collecting. Actual piece is shown, measures 5.5" wide, 3.5" tall. Authentic Native American, Gilbert & Becky Concho, Tribe: Acoma Pueblo You May Also Like... | |
