These stunning paper mache figures are the classic folk art of southern Mexico. Crafted and painted by hand in a rustic fashion, these figures are exceptional.
This art form, known in Mexico as Cartoneria, began during the Mesoamerican period, and displays the rich, old-world customs of the indigenous communities. Orginally made using tree bark called amate, the practice was banned for some time by the Spaniards and reintroduced during the 17th century. Today the modern method of using paper and metal wires continues throughout Mexico and is popular among religious celebrations and festivals.
These paper mache figures are great to display on any shelf or in any southwestern and hacienda style room. They also make unique gifts and conversation pieces.
Measure between 9.75"-10.25" tall. Each is handcrafted and unique.
