Native American prayer fans are part of Indian heritage steeped in tradition and fundamental beliefs. It is said that these Indian fans represent a gift that can heal the heart making them very popular as smudging fans. As believed by the ancestors, a prayer fan has considerable healing power and will dispatch a prayer to the heavens, resulting in life enrichment when they are answered.
A large variety of different feathers are used in the construction of Native American prayer fans, chosen from a number of different birds. Different rituals and powwows call for the use of prayer fans and a lot of care is put in to the selection and creation for smudging, ceremonial cleansing, healing and dancing.
Several different aspects such as physical, emotional, social and spiritual are reflected within individual feathers making up the prayer fans. Feathers that are mounted on the left side of the fan represent the father figure, while those on the right represent the mother. It takes a lot of time, spirit and devotion to create authentic prayer fans.
Native American prayer fans can make a great addition to your rustic home decorating too, and should be very carefully preserved and respected as you display and cherish them.
