Exceptional Southwest Decor for Home, Office & Unique Gifts

Zapotec Rugs, Table Runners, Place Mats, Pillows

Zapotec Rugs, Table Runners, Placemats, Pillows

Authentic Zapotec rugs are exceptional works and Zapotec table runners are a beautiful addition to any dining room table. These southwest Indian style rugs and runners are woven by hand using pure wool yarn.

Zapotec area rugs are also very popular as tapestries for southwest decor. Similar to some Native American rugs, these Mexican rugs are unique area rugs, hand woven in traditional fashion by the famous Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico.

In an area known as Teotitlan Del Valle cotton growing was predominant and so there were materials for textile weaving. When the Spanish arrived in the area in the 1500’s they introduced sheep and new methods of weaving wool. It is a combination of the traditional concepts along with these new techniques that were adopted. Being handed down within each family the techniques continue today and weaving is still very much a way of life for many families who offer their Zapotec rugs for sale.

It is from this beginning that Zapotec rugs "tapetes" have been appreciated throughout recorded history. Many cultures flourished in the fertile valley and all have appreciated the Zapotec rugs and weaving of garments for decoration. The use of natural dyes has also made the regions works highly sought after. They use natural elements in the area from nature such as bark, moss, insects and nuts as well as course spun yarn to give each piece its special character. The master weavers of the area today are known around the world for their works of art.

I've purchased Indian rugs at stores in South central Texas. I was leary about an online site I knew nothing about but I recently moved from TX and have no local source of Indian rugs. Took a chance and bought one rug. Quality was outstanding, price very reasonable, shipping fast. I immediately ordered more rugs and have been very pleased. I will recommend Mission Del Rey to everyone I know. Gail -AL
