The Navajo Yei Spirit, is considered a go-between for man and the creator. In Navajo legend it is they who control earth's natural forces like rain or wind and sun as well as day and night and their images have been used in Native healing.

Interesting notes about Navajo Yei sand paintings and weaving is that the male Yei is depicted with a round head while the female has a square head and the Yei is often portrayed in groups or with helpers in attendance. The arrow symbol signifies force or movement and power.

The Navajo "Yei rug" was originally woven around the end of the 1800's and was a pattern taken from traditional Navajo sand paintings. The traditional design became very popular and is still in use today such as in this reproduction and is a must for anyone interested in traditional Native American art weaving and culture.
