The Yei figures depicted in this wool rug / tapestry represent human figures who dress in the costumes of deities and dance in the Navajo winter ceremony called “The night way”. On the last night the human Yeis Perform a picturesque dance. The representation of Yei dancers began to be seen in woven rugs around the end of the 19th century. During the ceremony sand paintings were used in a sweat lodge to heal infirmities. The Yei pictorials in Navajo weavings were thought to have originated from those sand paintings and were reproduced in the weavings.
In the traditional depiction the dancers are always pictured from the side. The leader is the medicine man of the tribe and is called the talking god. He usually is faced looking at the first dancer. The Yei dancer following the line is called the water sprinkler. This Navajo style Yei weaving is of very high quality, woven by hand. 30"x40"
