Chumash slap sticks are made using local area reeds that have been dried and split. When you strike the stick on your hand or leg, it makes a snapping sound. These slap sticks are used in dancing and powwows. Because the Chumash do not use drums, the use the sticks to create the beat of the dances. These dance sticks are adorned in various ways using a variety of materials traditional to the Chumash Indians that have inhabited the coastal regions of California. The Chumash still use these slap sticks today. Each slap stick is unique, actual stick is shown.
